Virginia SAR–Pomeroy Foundation Grants Committee
In 2023, the Virginia Society entered into a partnership arrangement with the William G. Pomeroy Foundation to help celebrate and commemorate burial sites of American Revolutionary War patriots in Virginia. In simplest terms, we submit applications, and the Pomeroy Foundation pays for and provides the historical markers or plaques. These Patriot Burial®️ markers are similar in size and design to the silver and black historical markers seen along the Commonwealth’s roadways. But the Virginia SAR–Pomeroy markers are designed with a red / yellow / blue color scheme, with a distinctive patriot image imposed on an outline of Virginia. And of course, the words “Virginia Society / Sons of the American Revolution” surround the patriot image. The image on this page is a mockup of what this will look like. So why partner with the Pomeroy Foundation? Here are two key reasons. First, they share our passion in wanting to help celebrate community history by identifying and highlighting patriot graves. Our society has identified over 4900 Revolutionary War veterans and patriots buried or memorialized in Virginia. Many of them have very limited, if any, signage near the burial site. Second, the Pomeroy Foundation provides funding of $1550 for the cost of the marker production, pole, and shipping. We have set up a state-level committee to interface between the chapters and the Pomeroy Foundation. Chapters who wish to apply for a grant must contact the Virginia SAR–Pomeroy committee to start the application.
